Criticizing with Kindness

The IBIS method, as described in Help! I Have to Think!, can be applied to the thinking which accompanies dialogue and discussion. My teacher and mentor on the IBIS method, Jeff Conklin, wrote a book about the application of the method to complex, complicated situations, titled “Dialogue Mapping: Building Shared Understanding of Wicked Problems.”
The application of this method to dialogue and discussion can be a tool to help keep the conversation about the topic and not about people’s personalities. In other words, it can assist with the process that the author of the following article calls “criticizing with kindness.”
